Kyoeizan Daikyo-ji Temple is commonly called as "Taishakuten (Sakra devanam Indra)". While walking through the Sando (approach to the temple) and the Niten-mon Gate, you can see a big Pine Tree, so-called "Zuiryu no Matsu", in front of the Taishaku-do Hall. Its trunk grows straight towards the sky and its large and long branches extend to north, south and west. The west branch extends like a dragon crawls on its belly on the stone pavement, and the south and north branches spread as if it guards the Taishaku-do Hall. It also looks like a dragon flying up to the sky. According to Engi (the origin and history of the temple), Daikyo-ji Temple was founded in 1629 when a Buddhist monk named Nichiei Shonin stopped in Shibamata and decided to build a hermitage here as he found a sacred fountain under the big pine tree. It was this Zuiryu-no-matsu. Zuiryu-no-matsu and Taishaku-do Hall is considered to be a component of the landscape of Taishakuten and it is valuable as precious large tree that tells us a legend of Taishakuten Daikyo-ji Temple.
