第六天神社または大六天神社と表記され、元々は第六天魔王（他化自在天）を祀る神社として創建されたものですが、明治の神仏分離の際、多くの第六天神社が淤母陀琉神(おもだるのかみ)・阿夜訶志古泥神(あやかしこねのかみ)に祭神を変更しました。東日本の関東地方を中心に東北地方・中部地方に存在しますが、西日本には皆無となっています。
It was originally built as a shrine dedicated to The Great Number Six Heavenly Deity (Parinirmitavas), but due to the policy of separation of Buddhism and Shintoism by the Meiji Government, many shrines have changed their deities to Omodarunokami and Ayakashikonenokami. It exists in eastern Japan mainly in the Kanto region, and Tohoku and Chubu regions, but none in western Japan.
